Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Law

Business Analyst, Macquarie Asset Management

My interest in finance began during my Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Law studies, where I was also keen on building a personal investment portfolio. Through extensive research on different asset classes and financial markets, and by regularly following financial news, I developed a strong passion for finance. I knew Macquarie had a stellar reputation in the industry, but it was through university student societies that I learned about Macquarie Asset Management (MAM) specifically. I was drawn to finance but also wanted a role that made a real impact on people's lives. MAM, as a global asset manager, drives positive change through its investments, supporting essential services like transport and food. During the Graduate Program interview process, I met several people from the MAM Agriculture team who genuinely cared about helping me find the right path.

In my role with the MAM Agriculture team, which is part of the Real Assets division, I manage investments in agricultural assets to generate risk-adjusted returns for clients and develop solutions for food, climate, and biodiversity challenges. My days are varied, involving financial modelling, creating investor presentations, and collaborating with CEOs and CFOs on long-term strategies. A particularly exciting aspect of my job is visiting the farms we manage, which helps me build relationships and gain industry knowledge directly from farm managers.

Macquarie fosters a culture of curiosity and collaboration, empowering even analysts to make meaningful contributions. The Graduate Program provides comprehensive training and regular professional development sessions, ensuring I am well-supported and constantly learning. Macquarie's global presence offers endless career possibilities, and I am excited about the dynamic opportunities ahead.

My advice to students is to stay curious and open to learning, as Macquarie values diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Bachelor of Applied Finance and Economics

Analyst, Macquarie Capital

My journey into finance began with Macquarie’s Winter Development Program in 2021, where I discovered that a career in finance is much more than just crunching numbers. As an Analyst in Macquarie Capital, I am driven by the impact I can have on my team and clients. My passion for maths led me to study a Bachelor of Applied Finance and Economics in Brisbane, but I was unsure how to start in the industry until I heard about Macquarie Capital’s Winter Development Program for STEM and women students in their penultimate year. During the three-week internship with the Critical Minerals and Energy (CME) team, I engaged in real pitches and transactions, finding the dynamic and impactful nature of finance exhilarating. Following this, I completed a three-month Summer Internship in Sydney with the same team and later joined Macquarie Capital’s Graduate Program with the Technology, Media, Entertainment, and Telecommunications (TMET) team in 2023. The supportive and knowledgeable people at Macquarie, who were always willing to lend a hand, reinforced my decision to stay.

As an Analyst, my days are varied, involving building and running financial models, and translating numbers into pitches and discussion materials. Communication is a crucial part of my role, as I work directly with clients, often with their CEOs and CFOs, on business strategies. Despite being the most junior team member, my opinions are valued, and the work I do is taken seriously. Macquarie invests in my career by providing technical training, opportunities to craft pitches, and communicate ideas confidently. The formal support structure, including a buddy and a mentor, along with the supportive team environment, has been invaluable.

Macquarie’s diverse organisation allows for exposure across different business lines, and I have collaborated with Macquarie Asset Management, Commodities and Global Markets, and Banking and Financial Services. I feel that anything is possible within Macquarie Capital, with opportunities to move across sectors, teams, or even borders. I am inspired by the incredible women in senior positions and believe that such achievements are possible for my career too.

My advice to students is to embrace practical experience opportunities, as they can be catalysts for understanding your strengths and interests in finance. Building networks and seizing every opportunity are crucial for success in the industry.
